Sleeping in the Palace at Versailles!

Forggensee Lake
David and I left the Black Forest behind and came to Bavaria in the southeastern corner of Germany, home of sparkling lakes guarded by soaring Alps.  But the very best part of being in Fussen is that we get to sleep in a palace.

Or at least it feels like one.
One end of the living room with French doors that lead to the garden.
Our host said this apartment was the "perfect place," and he was right.  This old house was surely renovated by an artist because everywhere we look there is a detail to enchant.
Other end of the living room.  Note the detail on the door on the right as well as on the walls behind the chest.
The kitchen is to the left of the living room and has French doors leading to the dining conservatory.  This is where we eat (restaurants can't compete with our view), where my "office" is on one side of the table, and where we watched the thunderstorm approach last night.
David and I keep walking around entranced by some newly noticed detail and marveling at our good fortune in finding this place.
While we were having a late lunch today, Moritz, the owner's cat, paid us a visit to get as many pets as possible.
The bedroom has a chandelier, perfectly placed lights for reading in bed, a "secret" closet and those incredibly beautiful walls.
I don't know if these walls are original or rescued from some other building, but they are elegant and striking.
Chandelier and corner detail in the bedroom.

Our host left us a bottle of Chardonnay and two bottles of beer in the frig, along with a bottle of that famous "still" water.  We were delighted by the gifts, but not surprised as every detail in this apartment has been planned with guests in mind.  The leather sofa and floral couch in the living room are truly comfortable; there's adequate reading light in the bedroom a n d the living room; there are paper towels and plastic wrap in the kitchen; there are two towels per person, not one.  He even remembered to put umbrellas by the front door!

The very best thing about this apartment, though, is that we have not seen one bit--not one plank--of pine!

Practicalities -
Click here for rental information Mein Lieber Schwan apartments.  We're paying about €46 per person, but the splurge is worth every euro.

The apartments are ideally located as the train station is a five-minute walk in one direction while the tourist bureau is the same distance in the other direction.  The center of town with its pedestrian-only streets is straight ahead.  The castles are a twenty-minute drive away.

Follow-Up -We talked to our host the next morning who told us the wall panels truly are from a palace in Versailles.  Not The Palace, but another one--in Versailles. He paid a small fortune for these beautiful walls, and he still has a door panel that he's willing to sell.  Let him know if you're interested!
